Recording Tyson - The 7th Kind Cymballer
Well, John left at around 11pm-ish and Tyson and I stayed till 1:30am-ish to perfect his drum takes. Here's what I used to mic the kit:
CAD KBM412 - Kick
sm57 - Snare (duh)
MXL 603 - HiHat
SM 81's - Overheads
MXL 990's - Room mic's
CAD TSM 411's for Tom's 1,2, and floor
*and we tried the T.bone Ribbon off center in the middle of the room really high up near the ceiling for the crazy factor, but it was getting too much noise and less tracks means less problems with our buffer issue, so I pulled it.
We both loved the sound of his Ride cymbal, whcih i beleive is more the part fo the cymbal but the mic's did it justice. It sparkled and was nice and present without being piercing. This room 7th Kind has is also pretty impressive, though the asthetic appearance would lead most to think otherwise. When I would turn up the room, mic's Tyson's eyes would light up. This is a great thing, becasue I would love to get that natural room sound in on the record rather than some sort of synthesized version of it through plugins. Overall, I am extremely excited about the sounds on the drums so far.
